Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to be crowned the winner of the 2016 Ballon d’Or award next week.

According to Mundo Deportivo, both the Portuguese international and the Spanish giants are already aware of the results of the vote, and will look forward to him receiving the award next week.

It’s added that Barcelona star Lionel Messi will have to settle for second place, while it remains to be seen who will complete the top three line-up.

Antoine Griezmann is undoubtedly in contention after a stellar year with Atletico Madrid and France, although he will be expected to face stiff competition from Barcelona duo Luis Suarez and Neymar.

However, if true, it would wrap up another exceptional year for Ronaldo who has enjoyed success both at club level and with his national team.

Having helped guide Real to their 11th triumph in Europe, he also played a significant role in delivering Portugal’s first ever major trophy by winning Euro 2016.

Combined with his continued excellence both in terms of goalscoring and importance to both teams, he will be seen as a worthy winner by many.

Messi has also experienced a successful year with a La Liga and Copa del Rey double, although he did fall short in the Champions League and at the Copa America.

In turn, Ronaldo has done all he can to win the award and is expected to be announced as the winner on Monday December 12.
