AC Milan transfer news: Midfield ace eyed on free transfer, January exit touted for Gattuso misfit

AC Milan experienced a busy summer, but reports claim that movement in the next two transfer windows is already being planned.

The Rossoneri welcomed Gonzalo Higuain, Mattia Caldara, Samu Castillejo, Diego Laxalt, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Ivan Strinic, Pepe Reina and Alen Halilovic to the club this past summer.

While several also left the San Siro, it remains to be seen whether or not the changes made this summer are enough to force their way into the top four in Serie A in order to qualify for the Champions League.

However, while the transfer window closed in Italy on Friday meaning no more business can be done until January at the earliest, it has been suggested by reports that there could be further incomings and outgoings ahead.

As per Calciomercato, via the paper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, sporting director Leonardo is still keen on Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot, and will now potentially wait until the 23-year-old is available on a free transfer next summer when his contract expires.

Whether or not the French international will be open to leaving Paris for Milan at that point remains to be seen, but as per the report, it would seem as though he will be a target next summer.

The midfield is arguably still the area most in need of strengthening for Milan, with Gennaro Gattuso still likely to have to heavily rely on the same group of individuals across all competitions with a lack of world-class quality to stand out.

Meanwhile, that might not be the only change made in that area of the squad as Calciomercato also claim that there has been a complete breakdown between Gattuso and veteran Riccardo Montolivo, stemming from the latter’s attitude and application in training this summer.

That has led to talk of terminating his contract or a sale after he was snubbed for the club’s pre-season tour in the USA, but neither materialised this summer and so now it’s suggested that further developments are likely in January which could see him depart.
