The 28 year old cost his White Hart Lane side £26m and he has thus far managed just six goals in 27 Premier League appearances, a stat that is all the more woeful when you take into account four of those were from the penalty spot.

The Spanish international may well be keen on a return to La Liga but any chance Atletico Madrid have of snapping up the former Valencia man depend greatly on just how much they are willing to pay for the Spurs striker.

Tottenham would probably not be averse to cashing in on Soldado and one imagines fellow new signing Erik Lamela could also be offloaded as he too has had a nightmare first campaign in the English top tier.

Emmanuel Adebayor has been in fine form since Tim Sherwood took over from Andre Villas-Boas and is arguably the club’s only effective striking option, bar youngster Harry Kane who is perhaps too raw to be considered a regular first team starter.
