Arsenal have been mentioned as one of three possible rivals to Manchester United in the race to sign Ajax defender Daley Blind, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Gunners have been active in the transfer market so far this summer, signing both Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy for around £40m altogether, and may now attempt to beat their rivals United to the signing of an impressive performer from this summer’s World Cup.

Blind’s performances for the Netherlands have also seen him linked with Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, though United seemingly remain the favourites to sign him due to the presence of former Holland coach Louis van Gaal and Dutch striker Robin van Persie at Old Trafford.

Although Arsenal already have options at left-back in Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal, it could be that Blind would be targeted to fill another role in Arsene Wenger’s squad, with the 24-year-old also capable of effectively filling a defensive midfield berth.

With a move for Real Madrid star Sami Khedira seemingly falling through, it may be that Wenger has identified Blind as a decent alternative to come in and play that role for his team next season, as well as providing more cover and depth at the back.
