Man United are reportedly closing in on Feyenoord youngster Stefan de Vrij and Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen with new Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal looking to bring in a brand new centre-back pairing according to the Daily Star.

With both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand having left the club van Gaal would do well to invest in fresh central defensive options, not least as the likes of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have not impressed in the role over the past year, and moves for the pair wouldn’t appear to be hugely expensive.

22 year old Dutch international de Vrij is said to be valued at around £10m and his efforts at the World Cup finals will clearly not have gone unnoticed by his former national team coach.

A bid of £10m for Vermaelen is also in the offing and it’s an offer that may succeed given that the north London side had previously rejected the opening offer of £6m.

Arsene Wenger has put his faith in Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as his first choice centre-back partnership and this has left Vermaelen out in the cold for the best part of 18 months and the former Ajax man is too good a player to be wasting away on the bench.
