The Old Trafford side have been linked with apparent interest in Marcos Rojo, Mehdi Benatia, Daley Blind and Mats Hummels to name just four defensive targets van Gaal is said to be keen on but with two weeks left of the transfer window the Dutch boss is still yet to bring in a player to boost his back-line.

French international Mexes is no spring chicken and at 32 is clearly not a long term solution but could be one option that van Gaal is considering so as to not be left out in the cold if his other potential deals don’t come to fruition.

Man United veterans Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra have all left this summer and as such van Gaal has a fairly big defensive void to fill. The big money signing of Luke Shaw ably fills the left-back berth but a central defensive purchase, perhaps even two, is urgently required.

Mexes is an experienced campaigner who may be a player new AC Milan boss Filippo Inzaghi would consider offloading as he seeks to re-shape his squad.

Having spent the past ten seasons in Italy Mexes may well be tempted by a move to the Premier League.
