Manchester United could be set to make a double raid on Serie A giants AS Roma this summer, with moves for defender Mehdi Benatia and Dutch playmaker Kevin Strootman, according to various sources.

New United boss Louis van Gaal is desperate to bring in some top quality players after seeing his youthful side beaten 2-1 at home to Swansea City on the opening day of the Premier League season, and these two have now emerged as his top priority targets in defence and midfield.

The Daily Mail claim that the Red Devils are to make a £24m bid for Moroccan centre-back Benatia, who was one of the most in-form defensive players in Europe last season, helping Roma to the best goals-against record in the Italian top flight.

Meanwhile, the Daily Express reports that Strootman looks to have become United’s top target in midfield after the club have seemingly given up hope of signing Arturo Vidal from Juventus after a long-drawn out transfer saga over the last few months.

Benatia will come in as an ideal replacement for the departing Nemanja Vidic, who joined Inter Milan at the end of last season, while Strootman will be seen as a long-term replacement for Paul Scholes.
