The 29 year old is way into the final year of his Villa Park contract and his side are certainly vulnerable to advances for the no-nonsense centre-back and are therefore keen to extract as big a fee as possible for the likely exit bound Dutch international.

Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal, who knows Vlaar well from his time in charge of the Dutch national team set-up, is keen to strengthen his leaky defence and may feel a move for the former Feyenoord man would be a wise cost effective option to consider.

Though van Gaal sent over £150m on new players over the summer he will be handed more funds in January as Man United look to secure a Champions League berth for next term.

Man United saw veteran pair Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leave in the summer and a run of injuries has left van Gaal having to throw youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair in at the deep end and a move for Vlaar would provide some much needed quality and experience at the back.
