Manchester United have reportedly switched their focus to the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin for the January transfer window, according to Fichajes.net.

The commanding Uruguayan has been in superb form for Atletico in recent years, inspiring them to an unlikely title win in La Liga last season, as well as to the Champions League final.

Godin’s goal against Barcelona in the final day of La Liga last season decided the destination of the title, and it is no surprise to see him attracting plenty of interest as United look to spend big to fix their problem area.

Louis van Gaal’s side have been weak at the back so far this season, with a lack of defensive signings over the summer now looking a mistake as the club have been badly caught out with several injuries to key players in that position.

Still, some big names have also underperformed, and a host of possible signings have been linked with January moves to Old Trafford since then, with Godin’s team-mate Miranda also among those supposedly on the Red Devils’ radar.

Godin may now be their top target, however, and the 28-year-old has a clause in his contract that can see him move for £28m.
