Louis van Gaal is keen to strengthen his defence and knows Vlaar well from his time in charge of the Dutch national team but his opening offer may well be deemed as insulting by Aston Villa.

The 29 year old is out of contract at the end of the season and as such he could be available ‘on the cheap’ but Man United’s offer of £1.5m isn’t worth considering in today’s transfer market.

Paul Lambert’s side sit in mid-table but could easily be dragged into the relegation mire and as such he won’t be keen on losing Vlaar this month and if van Gaal really wants to land the former Feyenoord man then he would have to offer a worthwhile bid for his services.

Though Man United have improved a great deal of late, going 11 games unbeaten, they are still not all that solid at the back and senior defenders Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling have all struggled with form and fitness leading to Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair being thrown in at the deep end at times this term.

Vlaar was one of Holland’s top performers at the 2014 World Cup finals and would certainly jump at the shot of a move to Old Trafford.
