Plagued by injuries for much of the season, Costa now looks set to miss at least half of the club’s remaining Premier League games as his manager tips him only fit to be able to play four more matches this season.

The 26-year-old also had some fitness woes in his final season with Atletico Madrid, and this may prove a long-term concern for the Blues, though Loic Remy has performed well in his absence in attack. Mourinho added that he is not about to rest big players Nemanja Matic or Cesc Fabregas in midfield for this weekend’s game against Queens Park Rangers, despite both being one booking away from a suspension for the game away to Arsenal.

The Portuguese coach has been quoted as saying he thinks he needs to play his strongest team in every game.
