Manchester United offered five-year deal to Arsenal outcast in January

Manchester United offered a five-year deal to Arsenal outcast Mathieu Debuchy in January, according to L’Equipe, as reported by The Sun.

The Sun quote L’Equipe who claim that Louis Van Gaal sanctioned a move for Debuchy earlier this year, with a five-year deal believed to be on the table. Arsene Wenger, however, blocked the move.

Debuchy has only ever made 22 appearances for Arsenal during his two years at the Emirates. He finds himself behind Hector Bellerin and Carl Jenkinson in the pecking order.

Wenger does not appear to consider the Frenchman as a valuable member of his squad, but was unwilling to allow him to move to a direct rival.

Jose Mourinho has chosen Antonio Valencia as his starting right-back this campaign, with Matteo Darmian providing quality in reserve. The landscape at the back could have been a lot different for United, though, had this move gone through in the January window.
