Manchester City injury news: Ilkay Gundogan undergoes surgery to repair ruptured cruciate ligament

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has undergone surgery to repair his ruptured cruciate ligament, report the official club website.

Gundogan sustained the damage to his knee during City’s 2-0 victory over Watford earlier this month. City have got back into contention at the top of the table in recent weeks after an upturn in results, but the German’s injury has undoubtedly overshadowed the build-up to Christmas.

The City website reveal that he went under the knife to repair the ligament and there are no reported complications – which is excellent news. He is now on the road to recovery, but is unlikely to feature again this season.

City were well aware of Gundogan’s proneness to injury upon his arrival at the Etihad in the summer. He was in the midst of recovering from a dislocated knee cap when he made the move. That was asking for trouble, and Pep Guardiola has paid the price for it.
