Spurs stopper keen on Villa switch

by jakepjohnson on June 27th, 2008 3 comments

After losing his way through most of last season, Tottenham Hotspur’s ex-number one is casting his eye elsewhere after the signing of Heurelho Gomes from PSV Eindhoven, with Aston Villa his preferred destination.

Despite them not actually indicating they’d like to sign him, Paul Robinson has made it clear he wants to move to Villa Park to resurrect his career after such a fall down the White Hart Lane pecking order during most of the 2007/08 season.

Martin O’Neill is known to be looking for a keeper after Liverpool’s stubborness over Scott Carson and the release of Thomas Sorensen. Enquiries were made about Celtic’s Polish stopper Artur Boruc, but the Villans halted talks once the Bhoys quoted a £15m asking price, so Robinson appears to be a cheaper alternative.

And if they were to make a move, ‘Robbo’ would jump at the chance. A source close to him said:

Paul would welcome the opportunity to move to a club like Aston Villa.

He believes Martin O’Neill can help to bring the best out of him. He realises his chances of playing regularly at Tottenham look unlikely.

He feels such a move would help to resurrect his career.

Having seen many Aston Villa players receive call-ups to the England squad recently, perhaps Robinson sees Villa Park as the perfect destination to get some playing time and get noticed by Fabio Capello?

Lazio to hijack Celtic bid for Manchester City striker

by jakepjohnson on June 25th, 2008 2 comments

After making it publicly known that he does not want to return to Eastlands, Manchester City’s on-loan striker is more than likely to stay at Celtic, but not if Lazio have anything to do with it.

After a successful loan spell at Celtic Park, Gordon Strachan was very keen to make Georgios Samaras’ deal permanent, as the Bhoys look to keep the title out of the reach of Old Firm rivals Rangers. However, news has come from Italy that Lazio are interested in the 23-year-old.

The Biancocelesti are looking to seal their second Manchester City striker, after they took Rolando Bianchi from Eastlands in January. Lazio president Claudio Lotito spoke to the Daily Record:

Samaras is a player we’re considering and we’ll see what happens. I can confirm we’re actively trying to sign a striker and hope to secure a deal for one any day soon.

Samaras, who netted 5 goals in his spell in the SPL, has stressed that he wants to be a first-choice striker wherever he plays, with the Greek finding himself on the bench a few times at Celtic. Perhaps he would rather take his chances at the Olympic Stadium in Rome?
