It’s a matter of time (days?) before Liverpool finally get their way and sign Gareth Barry for somewhere between £15million and £20million, depending on which newspaper you read. Unlike players such as Ronaldo, Adebayor and Hleb, The Guardian reveals that the midfielder does have a conscience about the matter and is sad about how things have turned sour between him and Martin O’Neill this summer. Martin Laursen is threatening to be Aston Villa’s top goalscorer this season, with six to his name already. This includes three goals in his past five matches, a ratio anyone apart from Cristiano Ronaldo would be proud of right now. His ability to find the net (as well as some pretty stout defending!) has led to a number of clubs circling over Villa Park like vultures, although (as The Times report) the Dane has now committed himself to the Midlands club by signing a two-and-a-half year deal.
Martin O’Neill, the Villa manager, said: “Everyone at Aston Villa is absolutely delighted that Martin is staying on for another two and a half years.
“He has become a firm favourite with the fans and I would think they are as pleased as we are that he is staying. Martin has been playing some wonderful football and he deserves everything he gets.”
Laursen added: “It is not a secret that I really like it here at Villa. I have been saying all along that I would like to stay at Villa and I am glad this has all been agreed.
“I feel settled outside the pitch as well. I really enjoy staying here and have a good relationship with the manager and everyone around the club.”
Can the prolific central defender reach double figures this season? Will he score more goals than Agbonlahor (6 to date) or Carew (also 6)?
Aston Villa are set to lose Olof Mellberg in the summer to Juventus but manager Martin O’Neill is unlikely to lose his other central defender Martin Laursen. ESPN Soccernet </a>has quoted the Danish international defender as saying that he is happy to stay at Villa Pak and should his demands be met by the club, he could well stay on in the long run.
Laursen said:
There is going to be a meeting in the middle of next week and we will see what that will bring. But it is not a secret that I like it here. I would like to stay at Villa. I feel settled outside the pitch as well. I really enjoy staying here and have a good relationship with the manager and everyone around the club. I think we have a very good team and I would like to stay so hopefully we can find some kind of agreement. Is it close to happening? I have an agent that takes care of all of that. I only want to play well and concentrate on my football. We have had a meeting about what we think is reasonable, what we think I should have, but I will leave that to the club and my agent.
Laursen’s contract with the Midlands club runs out in the summer when he would be a free agent and legally free to play for any club that he wants without Aston Villa’s permission. But the player is keen to stay on at Villa Park and after three years of persistent injury problems, Laursen is demonstrating his quality this season when he has been a rock for O’Neill in defense. Should the contract talks between Laursen and Aston Villa go well and the player does indeed sign a new contract, then Villa Park faithful would be the happiest of the lot.
