Liverpool duo to depart in the summer?

by sub on March 3rd, 2008 9 comments

The Daily Mail reports that the Liverpool duo of Sami Hyppia and Peter Crouch could depart from Anfield in the summer. The British tabloid reports that while Crouch is poised to take advantage of the Article 17 in FIFA rules, 34-year old Hyppia might not be needed beyond this summer since his current contract runs out at the end of the season.

But somehow you are disinclined to believe this report. True, Crouch hasn’t played as many games for Liverpool as he would have liked this season but he declares that he is happy playing under Rafael Benitez.

As for the former Finnish international Hyppia, last week Liverpool gaffer Rafa Benitez said that he would talk to the player in the summer and the Spaniard may well keep him for one more season.

So are Crouch and Hyppia truly on their way out? Probably not!

Rafa pledges to talk to Hyppia about a new contract

by sub on February 28th, 2008 no comments

Liverpool veteran Sami Hyppia’s contract with the Merseyside club runs out at the end of the season and the player is eager to stay on Anfield for at least one more season and boast of playing for one of Europe’s biggest clubs for 10 long years.

Although Liverpool haven’t moved much in extending him a new contract, Reds manager Rafael Benitez now says that he would talk later to the former Finland international in the summer and says:

I was talking with him, but he knows we have to wait a little bit.

I am really pleased with him. The question now is to see how he progresses, but he knows my thoughts.

He doesn’t have to prove anything. We know him, and he knows why we have to analyse the situation.

Every year he has been a key player for us. He’s a centre-back with experience who’s good in the air and who can play the ball.

He is playing more games than we maybe expected this season – but every game his performance is good.

Old guard Sami hasn’t been at his potent best so far this season but he certainly merits one more season at least. Even though he is 34 years of age.

Hyppia looking for a new contract with Liverpool

by sub on February 26th, 2008 no comments

Liverpool veteran Sami Hyppia’s current contract with the Merseyside runs out at the end of this season but the former Finland international is determined to persuade the club to let im sign a new contract that will then take him to 10 years.

That wouldn’t be too easy though. Hyppia is already 34 years of age and although he still remains a significant piece of the jigsaw for manager Rafael Benitez, he is not indispensible. Yet Hyppia lingers onto a straw of optimism.

He says:

My priority would be to stay at Liverpool, but it’s not only up to me. I haven’t got any offers yet from here or any other clubs, so I’m just trying to focus on the matches. I’m enjoying playing. I’ve played more games than I maybe thought I would this season because of all the injuries. The only thing I can do is try to play well, and when it’s time to sit down see what happens. It would be very nice to get to 10 years at the club but I’m just concentrating on playing well.

Maybe given his service to Liverpool in the past 9 years, the Liverpool bosses will allow him to stay on at Anfield for at least one more year.

Celtic in shock swoop for Liverpool star?

by sub on January 27th, 2008 4 comments

Goal.com reports that Scottish champions Celtic are in Liverpool to airlift defender Sami Hyppia from Anfield. Well, the move is not expected to materialize until at the end of the season but Gordon Strachen is eager to convince the 34-year old Finnish international of joining them.

Hyppia’s contract with Liverpool runs out at the end of the season but the club hasn’t given him a new contract yet. At the end of the season, Hyppia will be a free agent and will be able to go to any club that he would like to. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez doesn’t appear to be too eager to keep the old legs at Anfield and the American owners too seem not to regard Hyppia too highly.

It does appear that Hyppia’s 9-year love affair with the Reds is coming to an end. Hyppia is not guaranteed of a regular starting line-up place this season and maybe he would move to another club in the summer. Although Newcastle United have also exhibited interest in him, Sami Hyppia might possibly like to move to Celtic. After all, he would be able to play in the UEFA Champions League at least with the Scottish giants.

Sami Hyppia: Sort out Rafa’s future first

by sub on January 14th, 2008 6 comments

Liverpool are 12 points off the pace in the English Premier League and although the manager and the players are talking buoyantly about turning the season around and of being still in with a shout in the title race, the harsh naked truth is that Liverpool are in a crisis and the central reason for the crisis is the mounting speculation over manager Rafael Benitez.

And Liverpool defender Sami Hyppia is eager to get that particular web sorted out. Sky Sports has quoted the Finnish international player telling The Mirror how he would like the tension and apprehension over his club manager be resolved so that the club can progress smoothly.

This is what Sami Hyppia told the British newspaper:

We seem to be becoming like Newcastle. Every time we pick up a paper, there seems to be something new. But our job is to concentrate on the games. In the football world there are some things that happen very quickly and you can’t do anything about them. The players hope that if there are arguments, they can be sorted out.

That Liverpool are gradually sinking even after a constructive and practical takeover last year and the downpour of cash in the summer cannot be denied. And veteran Liverpool defender Hyppia appears to have hit the nail on its head. Much is being talked about in the British press about every Liverpool match being the last one for Rafa and such speculations would once damage the club’s morale.
