Now we know why there has been a tightening of the purse strings at everyone’s second club Newcastle United…
The reason players are having to foot the bill for their own sartorial needs is surely in part because Little Mickey Owen is on £100,000 a week. The little Newcastle striker’s enormous wages clearly need to be cut down, and The Sun reports that ‘contract talks’ have begun between the club and the player. One imagines these talks involving Toon owner Mike Ashley telling Little Mickey to either take a pay-cut or take his gammy groin and anodyne press soundbites somewhere else. The Sun, as always, brings us a crystal clear picture of events…
MICHAEL OWEN has finally begun contract talks at Newcastle.
The England ace’s current deal runs out at the end of next season and he has been told by Toon owner Mike Ashley to take a pay cut on his current £100,000-a-week wages.
That left Newcastle fans fearing he would leave but the former Liverpool hitman said last night: “We’ve just opened contract talks, we are talking.
“I’ve got this season left regardless and we’re working on a deal to stay longer.
“There’ll probably be news in a month or two.
“This last year I played fully without hiccups to my knee. That’s well behind me now.” (The Sun)
So will Mickey take a drop in wages (a weekly payload that could employ approximately 1,000 Mathieu Flamini’s per week on the Arsenal pay structure), or will he get the bullet? Or, perhaps, both?
