Arsenal to pounce as young defender rejects contract offer at the Nou Camp.
Arsene Wenger will look to youth again this summer after making Barcelona teenager Julio Pleguezuelo a top target, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Gunners boss has shown a fondness for Barca’s famous youth system La Masia before, most famously snapping up Cesc Fabregas at the age of just 16, who went on to become Arsenal captain and the team’s main playmaker for a number of years.
There have been some slightly less successful ventures as well – most notably Fran Merida – but Pleguezuelo is rated highly by a number of clubs who have been watching him, and Wenger may have Tottenham and Manchester City to compete with for the young defender’s signature.
Pleguezuelo, along with Ecuadorian team mate Josimar, has already shown intentions of leaving the Catalan giants after rejecting a new contract offer from the club, and it is understood that he is tempted by the possibility of a wage rise in England.
If this transfer goes through, it may raise concerns among Arsenal fans that the club are continuing to prioritise youth over experience, an approach that has not led to silverware in the last seven seasons.
