David Luiz says Rafael Benitez has made him a better player.
Chelsea’s David Luiz has praised interim boss Rafael Benitez on Chelsea TV, claiming he has become a better player under the Spaniard’s management.
The goateed tactician has been an unpopular figure since taking over at Stamford Bridge from fan-favourite Roberto Di Matteo in the middle of this season.
Fans have not taken well to Benitez due to his Liverpool connections, and some mixed results on the pitch have not helped his cause. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is certain to replace him with a new manager at the end of the season.
But Luiz has defended the under-fire boss, saying he has enjoyed playing under him this season, and feels that they are on the same wavelength with their approach to the beautiful game.
“Rafa Benitez has helped me a lot,” the former Benfica man said.
“I love the philosophy he puts to the Chelsea players. He changed my game and helped a lot. He loves football and he sees football like me.”
“He wants to play with the ball, he wants to press high and wants to try things. He gives me confidence to try some things, like shots and passes to help the team. He knows my football, so I like that.”
Luiz scored a cracker for Chelsea in a 3-0 win against Fulham on Wednesday night, and will hope to help push the side’s drive towards a top four finish in the Premier League this season. Their next game is a difficult one against Benitez’s old club Liverpool.
