Spurs will rival their rivals for Barcelona forward.
Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to go head-to-head with the North London rivals Arsenal in the race for Barcelona striker David Villa, according to talkSPORT.
The 31-year-old was heavily tipped to join Arsene Wenger’s men in the January transfer window and the Gunners are still credited with more than a passing interest ahead of the summer.
Reports in Spain, however, have suggested that Spurs are now on the Spanish international’s trail and they could jump ahead of their rivals as favourites to land his signature and finally bring him to the Premier League.
Villa has managed just 14 league starts this season as he has found breaking back into the squad difficult following his recovery from a broken leg last term, and a high profile falling out with the club’s golden boy, Lionel Messi, hasn’t helped his cause either. He is now believed to be seeking a move in the hope of putting himself in contention for the national team’s World Cup adventure next summer.
Spurs have lost steam in their challenge for the top four this season and are looking for new striking options as Emmanuel Adebayor has failed to replicate the form he showed during his loan spell last year and Jermaine Defoe has struggled with injuries.
However, Villa is also being watched by Atletico Madrid as a potential replacement for Radamel Falcao.
