Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel will not be making a summer move to Napoli, his agent has told Italian news source Calcio Mercato.

The Slovakian has not been first choice for Liverpool this season after suffering a dip in form, and it had been suggested that he could be a target for former Reds boss Rafael Benitez, who was yesterday confirmed as the new Napoli manager after leaving his spell as interim manager of Chelsea.

Liverpool have been looking at a number of central defenders in the transfer market, such as Swansea City’s Ashley Williams and Manchester City’s Kolo Toure as they clearly see this as a position that needs strengthening. This does not necessarily mean an exit for Skrtel, and even if he were to be sold it seems that it wouldn’t be to Napoli.

“It’s not possible; I consider it a very difficult deal,” his agent, Karol Csonto said.

“I like Napoli and I have great respect for this club, but Martin still has a three-year contract with Liverpool and the most likely outcome is that he remains there.”

Speaking of Benitez, he said: “They spent three years together, establishing a good relationship with him, but I repeat now that this suggestion is impossible.”

Benitez may turn his attention to Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen, another defender who is currently not first choice at his club, and who has been linked with a move away this summer.
