Slovakian defender emerges as shock target.
Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has emerged as a shock transfer target for Arsenal this summer, according to Daily Express.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a known long time admirer of the 28-year-old and could finally make his move as he looks for defensive reinforcements after Thomas Vermaelen’s dip in form toward the end of the season.
Skrtel has had issues with his own form too, and faces slipping down the pecking order at Liverpool as Brendan Rodgers looks set shake up his defence too following the retirement of Jamie Carragher. So far the Reds have been linked with the likes of St Etienne’s Kurt Zuma and Swansea’s Ashley Williams and the Slovakian may look to move on should competition for places at the club increase.
The 6’4 stopper is thought to be keen on the idea of a move to London as he wants to play in the Champions League again. He had signed an improved deal that still has three years left to run towards the end of the 2011/12 season that saw him win the fans Player of the Year award and could be available for around £12 million.
Skrtel has described this season as the worst of his career with the club.
