Former Liverpool and Chelsea boss set to spend big at new club.
New Napoli manager Rafael Benitez is set for a summer spending spree at new club Napoli, as he aims to bring in five players he has worked with at his previous clubs.
According to Il Mattino, the players on his list are Liverpool trio Lucas Leiva, Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, Chelsea midfielder Ramires, and Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano, who played under Benitez at Liverpool.
The Spaniard joins the Serie A side having just won the Europa League in his short time in charge as interim manager of Chelsea, and is keen to strengthen a side that finished runners-up in Italy this year as they prepare for Champions League football next term.
There have been suggestions that Reds defender Skrtel could be available after falling out of favour with Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, though Benitez’s other targets are somewhat ambitious and certainly won’t come cheap.
However, the 53-year-old may be handed a cash boost if Napoli are forced to sell star striker Edinson Cavani, who is widely tipped to be making a big move to any one of Manchester City, Chelsea or Real Madrid this summer for £50million or more.
It is also understood that Mascherano would favour a link-up with Benitez, as he has found himself often played out of position for Barcelona at centre-back, and found the best form of his career at Liverpool as a defensive midfielder.
