Norwich City are understood to have made an enquiry to Liverpool over the availability of young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, according to the Daily Mail.

The former Charlton youngster, currently on international duty with the England Under-21s, has shown glimpses of fine potential at Anfield, though he has not managed to make himself a regular starter at the club.

Norwich boss Chris Hughton is desperate to strengthen his squad for next season to avoid a battle with relegation, though he may be priced out of a move after Liverpool have said they will expect an offer of around £8million for Shelvey.

The 21-year-old scored five goals in all competitions for the Reds last season, but may continue to be a backup player at the club after Brendan Rodgers has made several attempts to sign new midfielders in this summer’s transfer window.

Norwich may be hesitant about spending too much more money, after already agreeing a club-record fee of around £10million for Sporting Lisbon striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel towards the end of the season.

The Canaries may try their luck with a loan bid for Shelvey, who has also been eyed up by newly-promoted Crystal Palace, and Liverpool are more likely to let him leave on a temporary basis than sell a promising player permanently at this stage of his career.
