Liverpool look set to complete a deal for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas according to The Metro. The Anfield club have been strongly linked with the player over the last week and were confident of securing their man.

But a late bid from Tottenham threatened to place the deal into jeopardy. Liverpool were concerned that Spurs might swoop in and sign Aspas from under their noses in a similar way to the deal which brought Clint Dempsey to White Hart Lane last summer.

Portuguese side Benfica as well as Spanish giants Valencia were also thought to be showing an interest in Aspas’ services however it now appears that the player is destined to pull on a red shirt next season.

The 25 year old is expected to arrive in Merseyside next week where he will put pen to paper on a four year deal thought to be worth £45,000 a week.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been keen to secure the services of a new striker as he looks to bolster his attacking options. That quest was made more urgent in recent days following the emergence of reports that Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez is looking to leave the club.

Suarez is reportedly keen to move out of the spotlight of the English press and is looking to secure a move to Real Madrid.
