Rafa Benitez is trying to tempt former player Javier Mascherano into joining him at Napoli.
Javier Mascherano is Rafael Benitez’s number one target at Napoli this summer and Benitez is desperately trying to tempt the Argentine into a transfer to the Italian club according to Marca.
Mascherano is currently happy at the Spanish champions but Benitez continues to try and tempt Mascherano and Barcelona into parting company.
The Argentine was a huge part of Benitez’s team when they worked together at Liverpool.
Mascherano played under Benitez for three seasons and the paired worked very well together.
It is reported that Napoli would be willing to offer Barcelona 20 million euros for the midfielder.
This could tempt Barca, who are looking for a central defender and may have to sell players in order to fund this.
Mascherano may also be persuaded to join Napoli.
For most of the season, the Argentine has been playing out of position in Barca’s defence and a move to Napoli may mean that he could revert back to his preferred central midfield position.
Also, if Barca sign a new centre-back, Mascherano may no longer be a first team regular and could be struggling to play first team football.
This is very unlikely to happen if he were to move to Napoli as Benitez would see him as the centre point of his team.
