Barcelona new boy Newmar has been told by club doctors that he needs to ‘put on a pound or two’ if he is to live up to the hype and prove he can be as successful as Lionel Messi, the Daily Mail reports.

The La Liga champions have ended the Brazilian’s transfer saga by splashing out £50 million on him but have made it clear that they do not believe him to be the finished article just yet.

The 21-year-old has always shown strength despite his slim 5ft 9ins frame, but Barca club doctor Ricard Pruna has his doubts.

“My first impression is that Neymar needs to gain a pound or two. Our medical inspection was done quickly and his weight is just another data point,” Pruna told the club’s official website.

“We’ll get to know the player over the course of the season and we’ll constantly add to our data input. With this information we’ll know what his ideal weight should be.

‘The first impression is that he weighs 64.5 kilos and he has a tendency to lose weight. Perhaps he needs to add a kilo or two, but I can’t say exactly how many.”
