Blackburn Rovers have agreed a deal in principle to sign midfielder Jay Spearing from Liverpool for £1.75 million, according to the Daily Mail.

The 24-year-old has failed to get a foothold in the Reds first team and spent last season on loan with fellow Championship side Bolton Wanderers, who had been keen to bring him back to the Reebok Stadium but had to drop out of the race as manager Dougie Freedman is thought to be prioritising a striker instead.

However, Rovers must offload a number of players before they will be able to bring the tough tackling midfielder on board.

Blackburn still have the likes of Martin Olsson, Gael Givet and Mauro Formica on their books and they are among those likely to leave Ewood Park this summer.

Swedish international Martin Olsson looks the most likely to leave as he was absent from the Rovers squad that travelled to Portugal for a pre-season training camp as the likes of Norwich, Galatasaray and Russian club Kuban Krasnodar all battle it out for his signature.

Spearing made a total of 53 appearances for Liverpool since breaking into the first team back in 2008 but is now entering the final year of his deal at Anfield, and though he is thought to want to stay in the Premier League, he i said to be satisfied with another season in the Championship if it means regular first team football.
