Manchester United look like missing out on long-running target Thiago Alcantara after it was reported that the coveted FC Barcelona midfield player was set to sign for Bayern Munich instead on Thursday, says the Daily Star.

The hugely skilful Spain international has been targeted by new Red Devils head coach David Moyes all summer long, with the Scot thought to be hopeful of being able to tie up a reported £17 million deal for Thiago shortly, now that the summer transfer window has finally reopened for business.

The 22-year-old has been with the Spanish giants for his whole career to date, having been brought up and schooled at the Catalans’ world famous La Masia academy, before making his Barca bow back in the 2008-09 campaign under previous manager Pep Guardiola.

However, in the intervening period the captain of the Spain Under-21 international team is known to have become frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities at Camp Nou, with the playmaker having featured in just 101 matches in all competitions for Barcelona in that time, including only 68 games in La Liga.

As a result, the player has made it clear that he now intends to try out a new challenge in his career, although according to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope, that now looks like being with his former coach Guardiola in Bavaria as opposed to at Old Trafford next season.
