Liverpool are to make an enquiry for Chelsea wide-man Ryan Bertrand according to the Sunday Mirror.

Brendan Rodgers knows the 23 year old very well from his time at Stamford Bridge as well as during a loan spell at Reading and the England international may feel it’s time for a new challenge having failed to unseat Ashley Cole for a spot in the Blues first team set-up.

Bertrand can play further up on the left hand side, having been used as a winger, but is more adept at left-back but having seen Cole sign a one year extension the London born youngster could be tempted by a move to reunite with Rodgers at Anfield.

Ryan Bertrand joined Chelsea from Gillingham as a 16 year old in 2005 but had to wait until April 2011 for his Premier League debut and has managed just 20 Premier League starts in the course of his entire Blues career.

Rodgers may feel that Bertrand is a preferable option to Spaniard Jose Enrique as his first choice left-back but one wonders if Chelsea would be ready to listen to offers for the bit-part player.

This source believes that Chelsea could use Liverpool’s interest in Bertrand to help secure the signing of want-away striker Luis Suarez.
