Thiago Silva signs new PSG contract forcing Barca to look elsewhere.
Barcelona are set to intensify their interest in Chelsea defender David Luiz after their primary target, Thiago Silva, signed a new deal with Paris Saint Germain, according to the Mirror.
The Spanish champions had been on Silva’s tail for weeks and had looked to be preparing a move for the 28-year-old after he admitted that it would be a dream come true to play for them. However, the Parisians have managed to persuade him to turn his back on a move to Catalonia by agreeing a new deal to stay at the Parc Des Princes.
Another Barca target, Marquinhos, has also decided to turn his nose up at the chance to head to the Camp Nou by deciding to stay with Italian side Roma, meaning that the acquisition of the 26-year-old Chelsea man is now more important than ever.
The club have dragged their feet when looking for a new centre back, and with Alex Song failing to impress since arriving last summer, Eric Abidal’s departure, and the decline of the ageing Carles Puyol now means that the club are left short changed in defensive positions.
They will now look to push through a move for Luiz, who enjoyed an impressive season at Stamford Bridge last season, and if that fails they will look to secure the signature of Walter Samuel from Inter Milan on a short term deal instead.
