Sky Blues star man at the centre of new tactics
Sydney Coach Frank Farina has spent the off season devising a new formation for his side, with talisman Alessandro Del Piero at the heart of it.
Relieved of all defensive responsibilities by his coach, the prolific former Juventus man, now 39, will play as high up the pitch as he can.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald Farina said: “Alessandro is most dangerous in the final third. That’s where he creates and where he scores goals.
“There’s no point having Alessandro picking the ball up 10 metres into our own half where he’s not going to be able to do what he does best.
“Hopefully in that role, when we win possession of the ball we can get the ball to him and others in areas we create. That’s been his greatest gift throughout his career.
Del Piero has a fantastic goal scoring record for the Sky Blues, scoring 14 goals and five assists in his first season, as well as picking up the Sydney FC Player of the Year award.
The Veteran is yet to return to Sydney for Pre-season training, he met up with the club in Japan, playing 70 mins against J-league outfit Sagan Tosu.
Sydney begin their pre-season tour in Italy on August 7th, they face Padova in their opening game, the club that gave Del Piero his first professional contract.
