Former manager set to return for stopper.
New Napoli boss is set to continue the club’s spending by yet again returning to former club Liverpool to sign defender Martin Skrtel, according to talkSPORT.
Benitez has spent heavily on some extensive squad surgery since arriving in this summer, with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Raul Albiol and Jose Callejon all moving from Spain with the cash generated by Edinson Cavani’s big money move to Paris Saint Germain.
He has already managed to land goalkeeper Pepe Reina from his old stomping ground after Brendan Rodgers astonishingly allowed him to leave the club, and the 53-year-old is now set to return to Anfield for the Slovakian international.
The 28-year-old is another player who had fallen out of favour with Brendan Rodgers last season and had already been linked with a move away during the transfer window. However, with Jamie Carragher retiring at the end of last season, and Kolo Toure being the only player in that position to come in so far, the club could be reluctant to let him go as they could run into a potential positional crisis when the season kicks off in three weeks time.
But Italian newspaper Il Mattino claim that Benitez will make a bid and Liverpool face a fight to keep hold of the tough defender, who, like Reina, is also thought to be keen on linking back up with his old boss.
