Coach to use his Catalan connections
After the success of Liverpool and Manchester United’s visits Down Under a lot of A-League teams want in on the action, with many teams hoping they will be the next to benefit from a star studded European visitor.
However, Adelaide United Coach Josep Gombau, formerly a Coach at Barcelona’s Academy, has gone one step further, publicly stating he can bring the Catalan giants to South Australia.
Speaking to News.com.au Gombau said: “I can speak with the club with the persons that are involved with these kinds of games but of course to bring Barcelona here you need a lot of money because their fee is high.
‘’It’s something that Adelaide United need to think (about) and if they need my help I can give them that”
With Barca charging over $3m to play an exhibition game,it would certainly need to be a carefully planned venture.
Over 90,000 fans packed into the MCG to watch Melbourne Victory take on Liverpool, the same amount again watched Manchester United play an Allstars game at Stadium Australia and the Allianz Stadium, so the potential for profit is most certainly there.
When you consider that The Red Devils visit to Sydney saw a $16m increase in the New South Wales economy, with an extra 20,000 visitors, an outlay of $3m to bring Barcelona to Adelaide seems like a no brainer.
