Liverpool are understood to have entered the race to sign highly-rated Saint Etienne defender Faouzi Ghoulam according to the Daily Star.

Reports in Italy suggest that the 22-year-old had earlier agreed personal terms with Serie A side Torino after a bid was tabled. But a possible dramatic late offer from Anfield could bring about a bidding war from both sides for the young left-back.

Torino’s bid is looking unlikely to be successful after it was reported that talks between them and the French side had hit the buffers, leaving the English side in a positive negotiating position.

The promising defender made his international debut for Algeria in a World Cup qualifier against Benin and this recognition plus his fine form in France has attracted attention from across Europe.

Stoke City, Fulham and Lille have all previously been linked with the attacking full-back but it now seems that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers could make his move to land the defender.

Rodgers appears keen to bring in an additional left-back during the current transfer window as he looks to offer extra competition to current first choice Jose Enrique who suffered with injuries and inconsistent form last season.

The Reds have been rumoured to be chasing Benfica’s Lorenzo Melgarejo and Valencua’s Aly Cissokho in loan moves but Rodgers may now have switched his attention to the Algerian international.

The French-born player, who changed countries after playing for the French U-21 side, has made over 70 appearances since his Ligue 1 debut in 2010 after originally emerging through the club’s youth academy.
