Merseyside rivals Everton and Liverpool look like missing out on the signature of highly rated Verona midfield player Jorginho this summer, according to reports in the Daily Star.

Both sides have reportedly been keeping close tabs on the 21-year-old during the close-season transfer window, with a view to bringing the Brazil-born youngster to the Premier League next season.

Of the two arch rivals though, it was Toffees head coach Roberto Martinez who was believed to be the closer of the competing to landing the former Italy Under-21 international, until that is fellow Serie A outfit Fiorentina also entered the race for Jorginho.

However, it is now understood that the Italian, who has a contract with Verona that runs until June 30 2016, would prefer to remain in Serie A next season if possible after catching the eye with his impressive displays in midfield in the previous campaign.

Jorginho, who has so far managed to find the back of the net on four occasions in his 73 league outings with Verona since joining the club from Sambonifacese two years ago, was a key member of the Verona team that won promotion back to Italy’s top flight last season.
