The 29 year old winger has been linked with a move away from Anfield this summer following a disappointing season.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has played down speculation linking the Magpies with a move for Liverpool winger Stewart Downing, Goal.com reports.
Recent reports had suggested that Newcastle were preparing a £5 million bid for Downing, who signed for Liverpool for £20 million two years ago.
Despite the recent speculation, Pardew says that the Magpies aren’t one of the teams who are interested in the inconsistent winger.
“I’m a little bit surprised because there was no enquiry from us,” Pardew told reporters.
“We certainly haven’t made any moves towards Stewart. He’s a fine player and a Liverpool player.”
Downing has struggled during his time at Liverpool, often failing to provide accurate crosses when he is put into good positions.
Manager Brendan Rodgers even used him at left back during parts of last season and it is thought the Northern Irish manager is considering selling the player in order to raise funds for his transfer business.
Fulham are also reportedly interested in signing Downing and maybe tempted to buy him due to his relatively low asking price.
Newcastle have been quiet in the transfer window so far but are interested in adding several players to their squad before the end of the transfer window.
