West Ham may rekindle their interest in Liverpool winger Stewart Downing after he was transfer listed for £5million, reports the Daily Star.

The Hammers first looking into a potential deal last month, but were unwilling to meet the £8million asking price set my manager Brendan Rodgers, but after a series of failed bids for players around Europe, Sam Allardyce may return to a deal for Downing has he is running short on other options.

Newcastle were also reportedly interested in signing Downing this summer after Liverpool reduced their asking price to £5million, but will not be signing the England international. According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Bjoern Schwemin, the Hammers are lining up a bid for the 29-year old winger. With appearances in preseason hard to come by for Downing, he appears set to be sold to the highest bidder this summer.

West Ham turned their noses up at a deal for Downing last month to pursue other targets. Unfortunately for them, those targets have opted to move elsewhere. The Hammers were hoping to tie up a deal for Spartak Moscow forward Emmanuel Emenike this week, but the player will be joining Fenerbache. Werder Bremen forward Marko Arnautovic was also a reported target, but he too will not be joining the club.

Allardyce, with limited options, has turned to Liverpool for Downing, but is yet to make an official offer. The Irons are also keen on Porto’s 28-year old winger Silvestre Varela, with a potential £6.5million deal in the offing.
