Liverpool are interested in signing experienced Juventus front man Alessandro Matri this summer, however, not to replace their unsettled striker Luis Suarez though, but to play alongside the Uruguay international in attack at Anfield next season instead, according to reports in the Mail on Sunday.

The Merseyside giants have already rejected two club-record bids from Arsenal for their coveted 26-year-old, the second of which worth £40 million plus £1 was enough to trigger a release clause in the forward’s current contract at Anfield so as to allow the two parties to enter into negotiations over a move to the Emirates next season.

However, the Reds are still insisting that Suarez will not be sold to the north London club at any price during the close-season transfer window and in order to demonstrate to the Uruguayan their ambitions in the upcoming campaign, Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers is hoping to land Matri before the cut-off point of Sept 2.

The Northern Irishman knows though that he faces stiff competition for the Italy international’s signature from Serie A outfit Napoli, whose boss Rafa Benitez had a bid for the 28-year-old accepted by the Italian champions on Saturday.

But it is understood that Matri, who has a contract in Turin until 2017 and has netted 29 goals in 84 games in total for Juve in the past three years, would prefer a move to Anfield rather than Naples, with the player currently valued at £10m by his club.
