Tottenham are planning a shock move for highly-rated Barcelona defender Marc Bartra, according to the Daily Mail.

Spurs’ interest in Bartra heavily relies upon Barcelona’s transfer activity at the back, but the London club are interested in signing the young Spaniard as a great prospect for the club, having sold England international defender Steven Caulker to Cardiff City earlier this summer. The youngster made 16 appearances for Barcelona last season.

Goal.com are also reporting that Spurs will consider a move for the 23-year old once Barcelona’s transfer activity is clear up. After having a £17million bid turned down by Liverpool for defender Daniel Agger this summer, it’s unknown whether the club will improve on the bid. They are also interested in Chelsea’s David Luiz, but they are dithering over meeting the £43million asking price for the Brazilian defender.

With Caulker already sold, along with the exit of William Gallas, Spurs are running low on centre back options, and have already failed with bids to sign Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest and Tin Jedvaj from Dinamo Zagreb, who has now joined AS Roma. They were keen on signing Porto defender Rolando, but were unwilling on meeting the £5.1million asking price, and he has now since joined Inter Milan on loan.

Behind Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol, Javier Mascherano and Alex Song as a centre back at the club; Bartra is seeking more first team football and is not content with playing for the B side in Barcelona. Villas-Boas looks to pounce and sign the unsettled Spaniard in a cut-price deal.
