Belgian had been interesting Liverpool of late.
Long-time Liverpool defensive target Toby Alderweireld has joined Liga giants Atletico de Madrid instead this season, according to reports in the Daily Mail.
The Merseyside giants has been keeping close tabs on the highly rated Belgium international all summer long, with a view to bringing the 24-year-old to Anfield before the close-season transfer window shut on Sept 2.
However, with Reds head coach Brendan Rodgers having already bought to two new centre backs on Monday in the form of Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago Ilori and Paris Saint-Germain’s Mamadou Sakho following a recent injury crisis at the back at the club, the Northern Irishman had decided not to then follow up his long-standing interest in Alderweireld.
And that has since resulted in the Ajax captain opting to move to the Vincente Calderon ahead of the closing of the window at midnight on Monday as a replacement for fellow central defender Martin Demichelis, after the experienced Argentina international joined Manchester City on the weekend.
But it is not known whether the Reds still retained an interest in Alderweireld or not, although it must be extremely doubtful that the Merseysiders would have bid for the Belgium having just brought two new defenders to Anfield themselves on Monday.
