Up-and-coming Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom is on the verge of joining Championship outfit Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan deal, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The England Under-21 international came on as a second-half substitute in the Reds’ 1-0 win over Premier League champions Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon as a replacement for injured right-back Glen Johnson.

However, with the Merseyside giants having just agreed to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori, as well as being set to also land Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Mamadou Sakho before the summer transfer window slams shut for business for the year on Sept 2, Wisdom’s chances of featuring in the first team at Anfield this season have now been greatly reduced.

And with Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers now happy with the defensive reinforcements that he has at his disposal going forward, the Northern Irishman is understood to be prepared to let the 20-year-old move to the DW stadium on loan for this campaign in order to gain valuable playing time under Latics boss Owen Coyle.

Wisdom, who can operate at either right back or in the centre of defence, has featured in 21 matches in total for the Merseyside giants since making his Reds debut against Young Boys in the Uefa Europa League last September.
