Barcelona could be set to make a surprise move for former Juventus star David Trezeguet this January, according to French publication Le Figaro.

The 35-year-old striker is one of several unusual targets emerging as priorities for Barca manager Gerardo Martino this January, including Lazio’s Miroslav Klose and Celtic’s Giorgios Samaras.

With Martino’s team currently made up mostly of “false-nine”-style players such as Lionel Messi, Alexis Sanchez and Neymar, it is thought that the boss is keen on recruiting a more out-and-out penalty box predator for his side on a short-term deal.

Trezeguet, currently on loan at Argentine side Newell’s Old Boys from River Plate, has played in La Liga before for Hercules, though he spent the majority of his European career in Serie A with Juventus.

After first making a name for himself at Monaco, the Frenchman then scored 171 goals for Juventus, establishing himself as one of the best strikers in the world for much of the noughties.

A World Cup and European Championship winner with France, Trezeguet is a highly experienced player, but Barcelona’s interest in him will come as some surprise given that he is seen as having past his peak long ago.
