Liverpool are hoping to land young Ghanaian defender Daniel Amartey by stepping up their pursuit of him as the January transfer window draws near, the Daily Star reports.

The 18-year-old currently plys his trade for Swedish club Djurgarden IF where he has been attracting the attention of a number of club’s from across Europe thanks to his commanding displays this season in the Allsvenskan.

Liverpool have already added the likes of Aly Cissokho, Mamadou Sakho, Kolo Toure and Tiago Ilori over the summer, but Brendan Rodgers is rumoured to have been so impressed with Amartey that he will go back in for him when the winter transfer window opens up in the hope of continuing his progress at Anfield.

“I do not comment on individual clubs’ interest, but the player in question is one of Allsvenskan’s talents and is only 18 years old,” Djurgarden chief scout Khaled El-Ahmad told fotbollskanalen.se.

“It had been misconduct by the big leagues not to follow him.”

And Amartey’s agent, Patrick Dark also confirmed that a number of top European sides had been watching the player, but stopped short at giving anything of Liverpool’s interest away.

Rodger’s has already stated that he intends to strengthen his side in January even though the side has enjoyed a strong start to the season.
