The duo, who have at times been considered the best central defensive pairing in European football, are both out of contract this summer and therefore it’s perhaps no surprise that Moyes is targeting potential new additions.

Chief among his targets appears to be Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay, with the former Real Madrid man repeatedly linked with a move to join the Premier League title holders.

The 27 year old has re-ignited his career in Portugal after a poor spell at the Bernabeu and could perhaps be on his way to Man United in January.

Moyes is now said to be tracking no-nonsense Brazilian Maurício, who has impressed since moving to Sporting Lisbon in the summer.

The 25 year old has been scouted by Man United representatives and could well be available for a relatively small fee as Sporting Lisbon look to balance their books having hit hard times.
