The 25 year old Argentine is set to be sold by cash strapped Valencia, who are willing to sell Banega for a less than half the player’s £50m release clause as they look to balance the books.
Though Juventus, Tottenham and Arsenal are also chasing Banega this source believes David Moyes is set to win the race to snap up the former Boca Juniors man.
Banega is into his fifth season at the Mestalla and would surely jump at the chance of a fresh challenge at Old Trafford where his addition could help to freshen up a Man United midfield that is perhaps too brittle.
Given the continuing poor form shown by Anderson, Darren Fletcher’s ongoing return from long term sickness and Tom Cleverley’s inconsistent displays there is certainly room for a new midfield addition.
Banega is an excellent distributor of the ball and has an intelligent footballing brain and can read the game well and could ably link midfield and attack, arguably a role that Moyes hoped Marouane Fellani would adopt following his move to Man United in the summer.
