Both top-flight outfits have made the purchase of a new left back their number one priority for January, with the west London club keen to find a long-term replacement for England international Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge, while the Premier League champions are in need of a successor for departing Frenchman Patrice Evra at the Theatre of Dreams.

And it is understood that both sides have been keeping close tabs on Moreno all season long, with the Blues having dispatched European scout Mick Doherty to Southern Spain on numerous occasions to monitor the 21-year-old, while new United boss David Moyes is also known to be a huge fan of the full back too.

However, the one major stumbling block to either team being able to succeed in luring the Spain international to the Premier League at the turn of the year remains the size of Moreno’s buyout clause in his current contract at Sevilla, which stands at a whopping £25 million.
