Speculation in Spain claims the league leaders have made the 25-year-old their top transfer target in the new year, or, if they fail to make a move for him in January then a return for his services in the summer would be on the cards.
The Argentine international already has previous experience of life in La Liga having spent five years with Atletico Madrid, and he is close friends with compatriot and Barca stalwart Lionel Messi, which has only served to fuel the talk of a move away.
However, City have been quick to pour water on the fire that stokes such rumours and even Barcelona vice-president Josep Bartmoeu has now taken to the media to distance the club from the apparently idle transfer chatter.
“No, we have had no contact with him,” he told Mundo Deportivo.
“I can say that the story is not true.”
Aguero has been in fine form already this season, notching 17 times and has also been linked with arch rivals Real Madrid.
