A new central defender has been placed at the top of the agenda at the Nou Camp over the summer, and they are set to switch their targets after seeing moves for Liverpool’s Daniel Agger and Chelsea’s David Luiz fall flat last summer.
And reports in Spain are now suggesting that their number one candidate is now Basel stopper Schar, who has previously been linked with a move to Arsenal in recent weeks.
The 22-year-old is thought to be on the way out from the club at the end of the season, and Barcelona are now billed as his most likely destination, though the Gunners are still interested and further opposition could come from Italy with Juventus.
Chelsea had also been scouting the Swiss international, but their recent capture of Kurt Zouma has cooled their interest.
Schar was snapped up by Basel from Swiss minnows FC Wil in 2012 and quickly exploded onto the scene as one of Europe’s best young defenders.
