The 29 year old spent seven seasons in the Atletico Madrid first team set-up, having represented the club since the age of 11, before moving to Liverpool where the Spanish international was of course a massive success.
However Torres has come nowhere near justifying the British transfer record fee Chelsea forked out for his services just over three years ago.
Since his £50m transfer Torres has netted 19 goals in 101 Premier League fixtures for the Blues and is now surely deemed as surplus to requirements at the club.
This source claims that Diego Simeone expects to lose top-scorer Diego Costa and that Torres may be on his way back to Madrid, where he could team-up with his national team colleague David Villa, the pair having been a feared partnership for a number of years at national team level.
Chelsea would struggle to garner much more than a third of the fee they paid Liverpool but may be keen to cash-in on Torres whilst they still can.
